Growing Into Your Parenting Role... Tips and Tools for Every Stage of Your Parenting Journey - Mountain Arbor Press

The book takes you on a journey through the four stages of parenting.

Stage 1: Building a Strong Foundation
Research has shown that individuals are much better parents if they have high self-esteem and, in general, feel good about themselves and the life they are living. Therefore, the book starts the parenting journey by helping readers get in touch with themselves and developing the "Adulting Skills" that will support them for the rest of their lives. Using standardized personality assessment instruments and tools developed for this book, we help readers identify their strengths and areas that are in need of a little (or a lot) of attention. This section of the book also provides advice (and tools) for selecting a good mate and other  adulting success skills.

Stage 2: Preparing for Children
Our educational institutions do a very poor job of preparing us for our future role as parents. We used our 40 years of parenting experience to identify things we wish we knew about parenting before becoming parents and put those things in this Stage of the book. What we found was that the most important thing you can do at this stage is to do the hard work necessary to get you and your other Parenting Team Members on the same page as to how you plan to raise your children. This section of the book provides tools and techniques to do just that.

Stage 3: Raising Children
In this section of the book we share a lot of the lessons we learned and the tools we developed to implement our unique parenting style. Although both Renée and I had professional careers, we took our roles as parents very seriously. The very relational Renée would think of all kinds of creative things we could do for and with our kids, and the very analytical William, would develop a plan for implementing the ideas. We were the perfect example of “the power of teamwork.”

We soon discovered that others were taking notice of our parenting style. We were asked for our opinion on issues such as: how to get their kids to go to sleep without crying; how to stop the temper tantrums; and in later years how to cut the financial umbilical cord. We saw our parenting methods working on children other than our own and came to believe we had parenting tools and techniques for raising children that were worth sharing. We share many of them in this book and in the coaching and training we provide parents.

Stage 4: Making Parenting Life Memorable
When we first conceived this stage, we gave it the title “Doing things with your kids”. As we started thinking and writing about the topic we found that many of the tips (and associated stories) we wanted to share in this section of the book all had one thing in common. They had become legendary stories or traditions. In essence, we weren’t just doing things together, we were doing things that shaped the lives of our kids and became the fabric of our family. They shaped – and later became – our Family Values and gave our children a roadmap for doing the same for their families. This section of the book will tell you how we did this and how you can do the same.

We also make the point that we hear so many parents say they wish they could do more for their kids. They wish they could take them on more vacations to spectacular places. They wish they could create experiences for their children that they would remember for the rest of their lives. The most common barriers to doing this often include: 1) not having the time (because of demands by the job); and 2) not having the money to take that big vacation.

In this section of the book we show you how you can do more with your children and explain why you should do it now. We explain why there is no better gift you can give your children, grandchildren, and your family at any point in their life that lifelong memories.
